Some legends are born, some legends are made, and some are so silly that they demand for someone to take on the mantle of hyperbolic fable and act upon them.  And so itis with Super Jayhawk, Bird in Spandex.

Born on KU's campus (actually the KU Med Center) during the Chancellor Nichols era, our hero became a KU fan at a very early age, going to basketball games with his parents, both impoverished KU grad students.   When they asked what he wanted to be when he grew up, he simply pointed at the Jayhawk mascot on the basketball court.

Once his parents graduated however, they left for California, but the young SuperJay swore he'd be back to the Land of the Jayhawks someday.  And in 1987, he was accepted to the University of Kansas as an entering freshman.  And so he returned to Kansas, prompting people there to ask, "What would ever possess you to leave California for Kansas!?"

But our hero knew something big was coming, for that year, The Kansas Jayhawks basketball team, led by Danny Manning, won the NCAA National Championship, and things would never be quite the same.

Our hero became was suddenly reunited with his Jayhawk past, and rapidly became enough of a Jayhawk fanatic that it frightened most of his friends.  But it wasn't until the next spring, in 1989, that he found his true calling.

The poster that started it all, from the
Champions! Tournament in 1989.

Happening quite by chance on a flyer that was posted in his dorm, he spied the image of a superhero version of the Kansas Jayhawk.  Suddenly, and wthout any warning or logical explanation, he knew that was what he had to be in life.

And so he joined the Champions! Club at the Student Union, starting his era of playing Champions!, The Super-Hero Role-Playing Game.   He had always wanted to be a superhero before, but never had known which one.  Now, suddenly, everything had become clear.  He decided to champion the cause of his alma mater as a mascot would, only at a superheroic level!

That same year he began to assemble a costume, starting to spray-paint boots yellow and collect as much blue spandex as he could.   It took several years, and lots of people that thought he was utterly nuts but helped him along the way, but there was one thing he was missing before he would be complete....
